Few chefs have the following that Anthony Mangieri has amassed over the last 16 years with Una Pizza Napoletana. Anthony is a self-taught pizzaiola from the Jersey Shore and the unofficial front man for the Naples-style pizza movement. New York City’s quintessential food, pizza, is being redefined by a new breed of pizza maker that believe there is only one true pizza—the kind that Naples, Italy is famous for, Pizza Napoletana. When he moved his restaurant to Manhattan back in 2004, he declared his pizza better than any in New York, but also Naples, Italy, as well.

In 2009, at the height of his success and popularity, he decided to move his operation to San Francisco to start a family and improve his life. He again grew a fervent following of devoted customers due to his commitment to the craft, using naturally leavened dough, imported ingredients, impeccable toppings and a wood-fired oven. 

It’s been ten years since Anthony Mangieri was called the “Opus Dei” of the Neapolitan pizza in NYC. Now, after three openings in different locations, Una Pizza Napoletana 4.0 returned to the Big Apple on the Lower East Side. However, this time around he’s added partners Fabian von Hauske Valtierra and Jeremiah Stone, the chef-owners of trendy NYC restaurants Wildair and Contra, who are largely responsible for the addition of small plates and desserts to the menu. Version 4.0, which opened three months ago, now offers a variety of gourmet appetizers and desserts, which is a huge departure from his previous limited menu. Together, the new owners have created restaurant experience exceptional enough that they can charge $25 for a 12-inch pizza and it still seems like a bargain to their loyal followers.
